The Help by Kathryn Stockett.  We'll meet on October 27 at 8 pm at the home of Liz Tomlinson (724 East 1590 South) to discuss.  We've talked about taking the months of November and December off, so be thinking of some fun suggestions for reading over the break. Happy reading!

Official time change

For the month of September, we will meet on the fifth Wednesday due to Temple Week.  So we will meet on September 29 at 8:00 PM at Tia Hejny's house (661 East 1470 South).  See you then!

Time change for September

We have our meeting scheduled for September 22, but I just made the connection last night that this is during Temple Week, and the Bishop has asked that all meetings be canceled.  What do you all think about moving it to the next week, on September 29?  Or the previous week on September 15?

Change in the day for book club

With school starting and other scheduling conflicts, we are moving book club to the 4th Wednesday of the month.  For September that would be September 22.  Does that not work for anyone??

If you didn't find/finish the book, please still come!  We are still choosing books for the next couple of months, and it's just fun to get together.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.  It's a fun one!  I bought my copy, so if anyone wants to borrow it, let me know.

Also, I have a little conflict on May 5.  Kiersten has her choir concert that night.  So can we move it back to Wednesday, May 12, at 8:00 PM (at my house)?  If that doesn't work, is anyone else available to host it that night?

UPDATE: It has been officially moved to May 12.  It will be fun to discuss!  So May 12, at 8 PM at Stephanie Boyd's house (632 Sandhill Ct).

We are reading "The Lost Symbol" by Dan Brown for the month of March. We changed book club to Wednesday nights, and are meeting on April 14th at 8 pm to discuss it at Kari Larsen's house (1758 S. 710 E.). I have a copy that I hope I will be done with soon, so leave a comment if you want to borrow it next! Stephanie said that they have 5 copies at the Lehi library and 5 copies at the AF library.

 We are now reading the book Sarah by Orson Scott Card.  And I just found out that by using a Lehi library card, you can also check out books at the American Fork and Pleasant Grove libraries.  See you on March 2!

More good books

At the first book club meeting, I brought a list of books suggested by my Mom, who is also in a book club.  Here is what she suggested for books that lend themselves to great discussions:
The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar, 
Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards, 
A thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, 
We Were The Mulvaneys by Joyce Carol Oaks.  
They've also done some other good ones like #1 Ladies Detective Agency, Glass Castles, Joy Luck Club, Midwive by Bojahlian, Plain Truth, Poisonwood Bible, Pope Joan (this month's book!), To Kill a Mockingbird, and Water for Elephants.  They've also done classics like Great Expectations, Pride and Prejudice, and The Screwtape Letters.  If you need more info on any of these (like, uh, the author's name on some of these), I can find that out.

Good Books

Emily asked if we would share some book recommendations on this blog as well. Here's my first one (and I've added the label of "good books" so that if anyone else posts books, they'll be easy to find). It came back to me as I was watching a news story tonight about Auschwitz. What a fascinating, horrible time period.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne

I understand it is also a movie, but I have not seen it. The book is from a different perspective than other novels you will read about the Holocaust. It'll be in the teen or juvenile fiction section at the library.
